Town of Hull Considers Bike/Ped Ordinance
The Town of Hull in Portage County surrounds much of the north and east sides of Stevens Point. The town
government formed a Public Safety Task Force in the summer of 2011 to deal primarily with safety problems
on the town’s roads. Heartland took notice when Hull’s Task Force developed a draft ordinance that included
requiring permits for organized groups to hold running/walking or biking events in the town, and mentioned
the possibility of closing some town roads to pedestrians or bicyclists.

On October 18, 2011 Heartland formed the Hull Ordinance Action Team to respond. We recognize the town’s sincere and
constructive intent to improve safety for all users of the town’s roads. However, we have concerns that
some parts of the draft ordinance would be detrimental to health, enjoyment, transportation needs, and
quality of life for the residents of Hull and surrounding communities, and citizens in general.
We want to work cooperatively with the Hull Public Safety Task Force and other interested groups and
individuals to improve traffic safety in Hull and throughout the area.
