Rusty's Backwater Rendezvous

Sunday, July 27th 9:30 a.m. Rusty's Backwater Saloon
1715 West River Drive
(7 miles southwest of Stevens Point on West River Drive.)
The Event: This first
rendezvous at Rusty's Backwater Saloon begins what is hoped to be a
long tradition of a
great late July restaurant ride. We often ride past Rusty's during
our summer rides out West River Drive, so this is a time to see it
up close, ride the wonderful rural roads in southwest Portage County,
and enjoy a meal with friends and riding buddies. Rusty's is now
"smoke free", so you might want to play some billiards or darts in
the pub-like atmosphere while waiting for your meal, and will
open early at 9:00 am for those needing to use the bathroom, fill a water
bottle or get an early brewski.
Directions: Rusty's is located approximately five miles southwest of
Stevens Point off of Highway P on West River Drive where Mill
Creek empties into the Wisconsin River. A more scenic route
is preferred by taking West River Drive along the Wisconsin
River, about seven miles with light traffic making it a great
bike ride from Stevens Point.
The Ride: Rides of 52 and 35 miles will be mapped. Shortcuts
will be available. Maps and cue sheets will be provided for each ride.
Stick around after the ride for lunch at Rusty's--they have great
hamburgers and we'll have great conversation!
The Eating: Those who want to stay and enjoy the
non-smoking bar and restaurant are encouraged to eat with us
"Dutch treat" after the ride--you might be surprised at their
extensive sandwich menu.
Even if you can't make the ride,
come join us about noon. Rusty's does not accept credit cards,
but does have an ATM on site.
Avoid Riding Alone: Everyone can help to make all Club rides
more enjoyable by finding other riders of about the same speed
to ride with. Get to know these riders and call them well in advance
to make sure you have someone to enjoy the ride with.
Things to Remember:
- The course will not be marked on the road.
- You will be responsible for getting yourselves back to the
start point. You will need to rely on a map (not provided) if you fall back from, or get out
in front of our group.
- Even though we will be riding on country roads, remaining
single file or at most two abreast and on the right side of the road shows
respect for motorists, represents our club well and is highly recommended.
- And as always, certified helmets are required to be worn when riding at all Heartland sponsored events.
