       (see Bicycling, August, 2005, p. 107).
Event: This event is designed for those who are intrigued by competition, but aren't all that interested in racing. If you can ride about 20 miles at any speed and like to ride with precision, or have a group of four riders as a team, you could win this competition. Riders will estimate at the start of the event the time it will take, or their average speed, to travel the 18.4-mile (29.6 K) course, with the winner of the event coming closest to their projected average speed. The catch? No electronic/mechanical devices (watch, cycle-computer, heart rate monitor, odometer, speedometer, etc.) can be used during the competition!

Meet at 8:15 a.m. at Jordan Park for those who wish to ride the course as a warm up prior to the start of the event. Sign-in will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Course (29.6 kilometers / 18.4 miles):
  • Start -- Jordan Park;
  • Northeast on Cty Y to Cty J (9.2 miles);
  • Turn around (U-turn);
  • Southwest on Cty Y back to Jordan Park;
  • Finish Line -- Jordan Park.

Race Procedures and Requirements:
  1. Participants must sign-in by 9:50 a.m. Sign-in will include a waiver holding Heartland Club, its Officers, and members harmless for injury or damage (participation in this event is at your own risk).
  2. Competition will start at 10:00 a.m. at 2-minute start intervals. Start sequence will be determined by the order (slowest to fastest) of the riders' sign-up average mph predictions for event. Riders will start from a stand-still with one foot on the ground and begin their ride at the signal from the starter.
  3. Winner of event will be determined by the rider with the most points (see Points Calculation) based on coming as close as possible to the sign-up average mph prediction for event.
  4. Participants:
    1. must always wear a helmet when on their bikes;
    2. are responsible for obeying all traffic laws and safety procedures;
    3. are responsible for avoiding unsafe conditions, such as dirt/sand/gravel and other obstructions on the road, conflicts with moving vehicles and animals, etc.;
    4. who ride individually may not obtain help from other riders (no drafting) and/or vehicles and spectators. Teams must ride and finish together with no more than 36" separation between riders.
    5. must estimate the average mph over the course and must not use any electronic/mechanical device (watch, cycle-computer, heart rate monitor, odometer, speedometer, etc.) while on the course. (You do not need remove your equipment, it can be covered over during the competition.)

Things to Remember:
  • The course will not be marked on the road.
  • You will be responsible for getting yourself back to the start point. You will need to rely on the map or other means if you get off the course.
  • Roads will NOT be closed to motor vehicle traffic, so always stay on the right side of the road and in bike lanes when available. If you bridge the gap with the rider(s) ahead of you, stay well clear and pass on the left when the road is clear of traffic both in front and to the rear.
