The Pizza 100 100 Miles in One Day (Sport Enhancement Ride)

Sunday, September 7th
10:30 a.m. Mickey's, Stevens Point
(Corner of Maria and 2nd St. N.)
Event: This event-enhancement is designed for sport cyclists who are interested in
riding 100+ miles in one day, but would rather not do it alone. We will participate
in the "Circuit de la Pizza" event out of Stevens Point, riding from Stevens Point
for a 50-mile loop, then joining the Pizza Ride (the 51-mile route), for a total of 100 miles. We will leave at
10:30 a.m. and return approximately 5:00 p.m., and those wishing can spend time after the Pizza Ride
at Mickey's for eats and socializing. If we get a group of 5-7 riders, we will
be able to ride draft much of the time, taking turns "on the pull".
Requirements: In order to complete the 100 miles at a reasonable hour (5:00 p.m.)
we will need to maintain an average speed of 19-20 mph, which means crusing at 20-21 mph,
depending on the wind, etc. THIS GROUP WILL NOT DROP PARTICIPANTS, BUT BE SURE YOU ARE CAPABLE OF
RIDING 50-60 MILES SOLO NON-STOP AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 18-19 MPH. There will be plenty of drafting on the ride, and
a rest point prior to the Pizza ride. We will take nature and water breaks as needed, but be sure to
bring your own water bottles (enough for a 50-mile ride) and energy food. Also, don't forget extra tube(s) and tools
to fix tire punctures. THIS IS NOT A SUPPORTED RIDE.
Registration: Please contact me, Jack Friess, Ride Host, by phone or email to sign up prior to Sunday, September
7th, 2008. We already have 3 riders, so be sure to contact me in
case we change something (like, for instance, the meeting place) on the day of the ride.
First 50-mile Route: NO MAPS OR QUE SHEETS WILL BE PROVIDED for the first 50-mile segment. We'll ride an easterly,
southerly, or westerly route depending on the winds. Bring a map of the area so we can create a nice route, but different than that
of the Pizza ride's northerly route.
We will ride together as a group on both 50-mile segments of the ride, but hopefully we will have other
riders join with us during the Pizza Ride. It would be nice for our group to stay together for the entire 100 miles, but if
some of us wish to ride with a different group on the Pizza ride, we can do that too.
If we DO split up on the second segment,
we will meet back at Mickey's after the riding to celebrate at least one "first Century"!
Things to Remember:
- The course will not be marked on the road.
- You will be responsible for getting yourselves back to the
start point. You will need to rely on a map if you fall back from, or get out
in front of the group.
- Even though we will be riding on country roads, remaining
single file or at most two abreast and on the right side of the road shows
respect for motorists, represents our club well and is highly recommended.
- And as always, certified helmets are required to be worn when riding at all Heartland sponsored events.
