Ride Description
Monday Slow/Recreational Rides

NDP

The Ride: This is a slow, short ride for beginning adult riders or for people wanting to get back into riding. The group meets on West River Drive at Slomann Park on Monday evenings. There is plenty of parking, if you’d rather drive over with your bike. We meet at 5:50 PM and depart at 6:00 PM. We should be back by 7:30 PM.

We ride the same approx. 15-mile route every Monday as follows: route

South on the West River Drive along the Wisconsin River >past the Consolidated treatment plant >past the Wisconsin River Country Club >to the sub division near Rusty's Backwater Saloon >and back to Slomann Park on West River Drive. The total distance of this ride is 15.0 miles, an essentially flat route on a low-traffic, very scenic route.

This ride is the easiest on the Heartland calendar and is for road bike or recumbent riders who may want an easy, social ride. We usually settle into cruise speeds of
11-13mph (no wind, flat terrain). We may stop during the ride depending...more

on the needs of the group. We stay together during the ride, avoiding paces or accelerations that will leave behind fellow riders. If rider(s) fall back, we lower the tempo. We socialize as we enjoy riding the country road along the river. This is a good ride to experience group riding to see if it is for you. Less experienced riders are welcome. You may use this ride to "try out" The Heartland Club to see if you may want to become a member.

All riders carry water, a spare tire tube, and whatever other items may be need on the ride. We will be riding out in the country on a fairly remote road with little traffic, still we will remain single file or at most two abreast and on the right side of the road to show respect for motorists. As always, certified helmets are required to be worn when riding at all Heartland sponsored events.

The Riders: We are a mixed group; married couples and single adults, young and old. We all have differing levels of training, experience, and fitness, but share a passion
for bike riding on the road. We are looking for an easy ride because we...more

are just starting out riding, are getting back into biking after a few months or years, or perhaps are trying out a new bike. Some of us have recently gone through a medical procedure, are recovering, and are looking for a way to ease back into biking. We also enjoy the social aspects this ride offers. Mostly we just enjoy riding our bikes at a very leasurely pace, taking in the scenic beauty, and enjoying visiting with other bikers.

Will You Fit In? If you can ride an upright or recumbent bike at a speed of at least 10 mph for about 15 miles, then you should be able to handle riding with this group. Because much of the time is spent on this ride in converation with others, the pace is set to accomodate riding at a very low effort level. Whatever your abilities, this group always stays together and you will not be left behind or to ride by yourself.

If This Isn't For You: If this ride seems a bit slow for you, and you are looking for a little longer ride, you might try the Wednesday evening social/recreational ride. If you think you can handel a slightly higher pace and want to learn more about precision riding and gain more group riding skills, you can try the Tuesday evening sport ride. Or if you think you can handle a little faster pace, our Sunday morning social/ recreational biking events often have different riding groups and different route lengths for you to try.
