The Angus 100 100 Miles in One Day (Sport Enhancement Ride)

Saturday, August 23rd
11:00 a.m. Herrschners, Stevens Point
(Corner of Hoover and Patch)
Event: This event-enhancement is designed for sport cyclists who are interested in
riding 100+ miles in one day, but would rather not do it alone. We will participate
in the "Ride for the Angus" event out of Waupaca, riding from Stevens Point,
joining the Angus Ride (one of the 40-mile routes), then riding back to Stevens Point. We will leave at
11:00 a.m. and return approximately 6:00 p.m., and will spend a short time (approx. 3/4 hour)
at T.W. Martins for eats and socializing after the Angus ride. If we get a group of 5-7 riders, we will
be able to ride draft much of the time, taking turns "on the pull".
Requirements: In order to return to Stevens Point at a reasonable hour (6:00 p.m.)
we will need to maintain an average speed of 19-20 mph, which means crusing at 20-21 mph,
depending on the wind, etc. THIS GROUP WILL NOT DROP PARTICIPANTS, BUT BE SURE YOU ARE CAPABLE OF
RIDING 50-60 MILES SOLO NON-STOP AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 18-19 MPH. There will be plenty of drafting on the ride, and
rest points prior to and after the Angus ride. We will take nature and water breaks as needed, but be sure to
bring your own water bottles (enough for a 40-mile ride) and energy food. Also, don't forget extra tube(s) and tools to fix tire punctures. THIS IS NOT A SUPPORTED RIDE.
Registration: Please contact me, Jack Friess, Ride Host, by phone or email to sign up prior to Saturday, August 23, 2008.
Routes Out and Back: NO MAPS OR QUE SHEETS (other than what's printed here) WILL BE PROVIDED, except for the Angus route. We'll ride a southerly route out, and a northerly route back:
- Out: Porter => Smokey => Lake Thomas => K (south) => D => DD => Durrant => Cobb Town => Q => Erickson => Butts => 54
- Back: 49 => Larson => Q => Indian Valley => V => T => SS => G => 161 => Rolling Hills => K => OH18
We will ride together as a group on the out and back segments. During the Angus ride, we may want to stay together too,
and have other riders join with us. If some of us wish to ride a different Angus 40-mile route, we can do that too.
We will leave T.W. Martins no later than 4:00 p.m., so if you choose to ride with another group on the Angus ride,
you will need to be sure to get back to T.W. Martins by the departure time, or be able to hook up with our group enroute.
Things to Remember:
- The course will not be marked on the road.
- You will be responsible for getting yourselves back to the
start point. You will need to rely on a map if you fall back from, or get out
in front of the group.
- Even though we will be riding on country roads, remaining
single file or at most two abreast and on the right side of the road shows
respect for motorists, represents our club well and is highly recommended.
- And as always, certified helmets are required to be worn when riding at all Heartland sponsored events.
